If you haven't read any graphic novels, give them a try - you may be pleasantly surprised. I recommend the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and Dave Lloyd and Maus by Art Spiegelman. You might stop thinking of comic books as being just kid's stuff.
If you're too lazy, or don't want to send money on something you think you'll hate, take a look at Bruno. It's available on the Web, so you have no excuses, and it's one of the best cartoon strips I've found on the web. I ordered a set of books from the author, Chris Baldwin, and unlike the usual mass-produced stuff you get, what actually turned up in the mail was a pair of wonderful hand-made (including hand-sewn) comic books. They are lovely things in their own right, and a suitably cool medium for the Bruno strip. Unfortunately the strip has come to an end, but I can't wait for the third book to become available. If you like stories that deal with adult issues in a funny, touching way then Bruno is for you. I can't recommend this enough. If you like the on-line version, buy copies of the books (they're cheap enough) and get wonderful works of art as well.
I'm also a big music fan - mainly rock but enough other stuff to surprise people now and then. Current favourites are:
This may all give you the impression that I'm nothing more than a couch potato. This is mostly correct, but I do go climbing every week at a local climbing wall. Occasionally, when I can find somewhere suitably empty, I juggle as well. I'm competent, but far from brilliant, at juggling three balls, and my club juggling is getting better when I can be bothered practising.
As if that wasn't enough, I'm also studying Chinese at evening classes. This mainly came about because I was bored with not learning anything that wasn't computer-related, and I've always enjoyed studying languages. I chose Chinese because my girlfriend is Taiwanese, and because it was so different from the usual European languages that people study.
In the past I've spent a fair bit of time helping one of my friends build a kit car, and before that I gave another a hand with renovating his house. These are pretty much ideal hobbies for me - I'm an inveterate tinkerer, and projects like these give me a chance to play with power tools and actually build something that I wouldn't get to do otherwise. The best bit is that it's almost entirely at someone else's expense, and they even buy me beer for helping them.
Since I get a lot of email, it's probably not a surprise that I get quite a lot of funny stuff emailed to me. If you want to take a look at some of it, there's an archive of the best stuff here.
Occasionally, though, my destructive tendencies get the better of me and I do something like this.
